WP5: ICT monitoring and reporting systems
The project Work Package 5 intends to overcome the limitation of the state of the art surveillance systems for Influenza by proposing an innovative ICT approach based on Web2.0 tools. Starting from the successful experiences of internet-based monitoring systems (IMS) in the Netherlands (since 2003) and in Portugal (since 2005) which displayed high values in surveillance, epidemiological analysis and participant recruitment, the project is deploying an innovative real-time surveillance system across European countries under the collective name of Influenzanet.
The IMS works with the Internet participation of the population to collect real-time information on the distribution of diseases through web-services. The collaborative participation of users is achieved through targeted communication and recruitment. Graphic representation, processing and analysis of data on the progression of the disease, is provided in real time. In contrast with the traditional system of sentinel networks of mainly primary care physicians, Influenzanet obtains its data directly from the population. This creates a fast and flexible monitoring system whose uniformity allows for direct comparison of ILI rates between countries.
It has been operational in The Netherlands and Belgium (since 2003), Portugal (since 2005), Italy (since 2008) and United Kingdom (since 2009), and the current objective is to implement Influenzanet in more European countries.
NEW! The Unit UMR S (Unité de recherche mixte en santé) 707 at INSERM is recruiting an animator/recruiter/communication expert for the implementation in France of the WP5 Internet-based Monitoring System for Influenza Surveillance. The platform will thus represent the French node of the Influenzanet Surveillance Network. Details for the job position can be found here.
